Maine Windjammer Weekend

The Camden Windjammer Festival, a celebration of Camden, Maine’s, maritime heritage and living traditions, is scheduled to begin this Friday, September 3. The event promises lots of fun, food, and history for the whole family. Here’s a quick rundown of events. If you’d like to bring your boat to Camden for the celebration, be aware that transient space is very limited.

Windjammer Schedule of Events

Friday, Sept. 3

  • Noon: Festival officially starts.
  • Noon: Pirates invade Camden Harbor.
  • Noon to 5 p.m. Arrival of the windjammers at the public landing/harbor.
  • Noon to 4 p.m.: Maritime Heritage Fair. Ongoing presentations, at the public landing, include: Adirondack guide boat, artist-in-residence, blacksmithing, boating safety and navigation, boat building, bollard line toss, building half-hull models, building-a-boat contest, children’s learn-to-draw class, coastal heritage childhood booth, donkey engines, early marine engines, fisherman’s family reenactment, knot tying, lobster traps, mast hoop-making, model boats, ocean-going mini sailboats, Project Puffin, reading to children, schooner sail repair, solar power cube, storytime with Miss Amy, timberframe cutting, traditional pinkie schooner, toboggan building, U.S Coast Guard display, woodturning, and woodburning cookstove.
  • Noon to 5 p.m.: Windjammer dinner auction at the public landing.
  • 2 p.m.: “My Yacht Designs and the Lessons They Taught Me” at the Camden Public Library.
  • 3:30 to 5 p.m.: Public contradance at the public landing.
  • 5 p.m.: Formal welcome to the fleet at the public landing.
  • 7 to 9 p.m.: Schooner Crew Talent Show at Harbor Park.
  • 9 p.m.: Fireworks over the harbor.

Saturday, Sept. 4

  • 7 to 10 a.m.: Pancake breakfast at the public landing.
  • 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Maritime Heritage Fair at the public landing.
  • 9:45 a.m.: “Hoola Hoop-La” — crate race warm up at the public landing.
  • 10 a.m.: Lobster crate race at the public landing/harbor.
  • 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Chowder Challenge at the public landing.
  • Noon to 5 p.m.: music in the streets throughout town.
  • 1 p.m.: Lobster hauling demonstration in the harbor.
  • 1 p.m.: Children’s drawing class at the public landing.
  • 1:30 p.m.: Elvering with Scooby in the harbor.
  • 2 to 4 p.m.: Schooner open house.
  • All day: Build-a-boat construction at the public landing.
  • 7:30 p.m.: Movie “Captains Courageous” (1937) at the library amphitheatre.
  • 7:30 p.m.: Free rock concert: Paranoid Social Club at the Camden Opera House.

Sunday, Sept. 5

  • 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Maritime Heritage Fair at the public landing.
  • 9 a.m.: Chadwick Cup R/C boat race at the public landing.
  • 9 a.m. to noon: Family scavenger hunt throughout town.
  • 10 a.m.: Sea Dog Show at Harbor Park.
  • 10 a.m.: Storytime with Miss Amy at the public landing.
  • 10 a.m. to noon: Schooner sail repair at the public landing.
  • 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Harbor rowing (signup required) in the harbor.
  • Noon: Pirates of the Dark Rose attack Camden at Harbor Park.
  • 1 p.m.: Children’s drawing class at the public landing.
  • 2 to 4 p.m. Schooner open house.
  • 3 p.m.: Build-a-boat race at the public landing.
  • 4 p.m.: All comers boat parade in the harbor.
  • 7:30 p.m. Camden Windjammer Festival presents Gordon Bok with guests The January Men and Then Some, plus an opening set by Rockland’s own singer/songwriter Mehuman Jonson. At Harbor Park.
