Man Drives Car into Cape Cod Canal

Cape Cod Times: A Bourne man intentionally crashed a car through a railing Tuesday morning [Sept. 6] and plunged into the Cape Cod Canal 35’ below in a scene that witnesses say looked like it was right out of an action movie.

The unidentified man, who officials said was in his 50s, emerged from the black 2006 Ford Focus moments later and swam about 15 feet to shore, according to two eyewitnesses. Rescue crews pulled him off the rocks and he was taken by ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital, police and fire officials said.

“It was intentional,” Bourne police Lt. Brandon Esip said at the scene, although officials declined to identify the man or whether they believed it was a suicide attempt.
