Man Drowns in Rockport, MA
June 13, 2011
Boston.com: A 20-year-old Waltham man drowned yesterday as he was fishing with a friend at a Rockport beach, officials said.
Julio Concepcion either slipped off the rocky slope at Pebble Beach, where he and a friend were fishing around 9:00 a.m., or was knocked into the ocean by a wave, said Stephen O’Connell, a spokesman for the Essex County district attorney’s office.
Concepcion yelled out, his friend told authorities, but when the friend turned around, Concepcion was no longer there, O’Connell said.
Rockport police, firefighters, and harbormasters as well as the Coast Guard responded. Sea conditions were rough, with large waves ranging from 3 to 6 feet breaking continuously on the rocks. That slowed the rescue, said Rockport harbormaster Rosemary Lesch, who was on the scene with fellow Rockport harbormaster Scott Story.
