Massachusetts Volunteers Count Herring Returning to Spawn
April 22, 2012
Volunteers in Kingston, Massachusetts, have been counting the number of herring returning to spawn in the Jones River, according to an article on WickedLocal.com.
While their best spawning grounds on the river — Silver Lake —are still out of their reach, the creation of a fish ladder at the Elm Street Dam, and the recent demolition of the Wapping Road Dam, allow the herring to travel farther upriver than they have in decades. And many people hope that will increase the local population of herring.
