McMurdo Launches Portable SmartFind S10 AIS Rescue Device
February 23, 2011
The new SmartFind S10 Automatic Identification System (AIS) Beacon by McMurdo incorporates both AIS and GPS technology to give rescuers precise location information for boaters in distress.
Waterproof, buoyant and compact, the unit transmits both AIS and GPS data to all AIS receiver-equipped vessels and land-based Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) stations within a 4-mile radius. The SmartFind S10, which features a GPS receiver, transmits target information, structured alert messages, GPS position information and a unique serialized identification number. Bearing, range and location information are accurately transmitted and displayed on the AIS receiver or plotter screen, giving rescuers all the information they require to locate a person in distress.
The Smartfind S10 AIS Beacon will transmit continuously for a minimum of 24 hours as it regularly updates position information, and has a 5-year battery-storage life. Waterproof to 60 meters, it also features a flashing LED to help rescuers home in on a target. Measuring 9.7” by 1.7” and weighing just 5.29 ounces, the unit is light and portable. The beacon is easy to activate, requiring a simple 2-stage activation function.
