News has come in concerning increased protection for menhaden in Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay. For 2011, all of Greenwich Bay and the entire Providence River will be closed to the commercial purse seining of menhaden.

Close monitoring of the seiners will continue as before, along with the automatic shutdown of the seine fishery if the number of fish in the Bay drops to 1.5 million pounds.

The small harbors of the bay, such as Wickford, Newport, Allen Harbor, Bristol Harbor and the Kickemuit River, are open to seining, but these are areas that cannot be accessed by the large seine vessels.
