Newburyport News: Yankee Homecoming is a celebration steeped in tradition, but that doesn’t mean it can’t roll out new events. The first annual Kayak and Paddle Board Race is scheduled for Saturday, July 30, on the Merrimack River.

Registration time is 7:00 a.m., and the race—with numerous divisions—will start at about 8:30 a.m.

Organizers say the race is designed to bring together those who are interested in 2 activities that are growing in popularity: kayaking and paddleboarding.

“The race will bring attention to the sports and to the river itself,” said Sandy Gilbert, a Yankee Homecoming volunteer who manages Newbury Kayak and Canoe on the Parker River in Newbury.
