Minke Whale Enters Nantucket Harbor
August 16, 2012
The Inquirer & Mirror: On one of waterfront’s busiest days of the year, in the middle of the annual Race Week and hours before the arrival of 2 tall ships, a minke whale found its way into Nantucket Harbor, snarling boat traffic even as it provided a spectacle for island residents and visitors.
Marine officials briefly blocked boats, including the Steamship Authority’s car ferry M/V Eagle, from entering the harbor to protect the whale, but later reopened the channel to boating traffic, advising vessels to proceed slowly at “clutch speed” to protect the marine mammal.
