MJM 36z is Light, Efficient, Fast
December 15, 2010
Available in Express and Downeast versions, the new 36z from cutting-edge builder MJM Yachts was designed by noted naval architect Doug Zurn and built by Boston Boatworks using high-tech materials and resin-infusion techniques to create a hull that’s incredibly light, fast, responsive and fuel-efficient. The versatile 36z can easily sleep 4 and serves as a stylish and efficient vessel for both weekend and day excursions, especially longer daytrips that require a fast, fuel-efficient boat.
The shallow draft of the 36z lets it access skinny water for beach picnics, and the boat is well laid out for single-handed operation (note the sliding helm-side door for the easy management of mooring and dock lines). The 36z is big enough to accommodate 12 people, and its single-level cockpit allows traffic and conversation to flow easily from the helm to the transom. There’s comfortable seating everywhere you look.
Equipped with twin 170- or 220-hp Volvo diesels, the 36z burns less than half the fuel of similar-sized boats…
At the helm you’ll find ample space for a pair of large, flush-mount displays, plus a Volvo-Penta IPS-type joystick to control the twin 5-cylinder, low-emission D3 diesel engines with OceanX sterndrives. The joystick control makes docking and close-quarters maneuvering incredibly easy.
The entire MJM line is known for low maintenance, which means you won’t find any exposed wood on this boat. And while the 36 sports classic lines, its low-drag, modified-V planing hull replaces the typical Downeast semi-displacement configuration, meaning less power (and less fuel) is needed to push it through the water.
Equipped with twin 170- or 220-hp Volvo diesels, the 36z burns less than half the fuel of similar-sized boats while achieving a top-end speed of around 30 knots. Cruise is around 25 knots at 2 nautical miles per gallon (12-14 gph).
Below, you’ll find a cabin with a large wraparound lounge that converts to a pair of twin berths (or a single double berth with use of insert), an enclosed head with shower and sink, and a galley with a recessed stainless-steel sink and removable Corian cover. There’s also a top-loading icebox, above-counter storage cabinet with shelf, a storage locker with shelf for pots/pans and cleaning supplies under sink.
