More Women Turn to Lobstering in Maine
October 11, 2014
Portland Press Herald reports on the rise of women participating in commercial lobster fishing along the Maine coast.
According to the article, females make up a small minority of Maine lobster fishermen; just 4% of the state’s 5,171 commercial lobster licenses are held by women, according to the Maine Department of Marine Resources. But the license numbers do not include female sternmen or women on the waiting list for licenses. The article explores why more women are working at sea, and how the attitude towards women participating in a traditionally male occupation has changed.
