Mystic Seaport to Feature “Behind the Canvas” Painters Series
January 25, 2011
The Mystic Seaport of Mystic, Connecticut, will present a 4-part series hosted by professional painters who will discuss their work and demonstrate how they capture maritime subjects on paper and canvas. The renowned artists will share their personal stories through lectures, slide presentations and live demonstrations. Attendees will be given a behind-the-canvas look at what inspires each artist’s creativity, and will additionally learn what qualities art collectors look for in a painting.
The series, called “Behind the Canvas”, kicks off on January 29 with classical painter Peter Layne Arguimbau, an artist well known for his mastery of the Flemish Technique. The series will continue Saturdays, February 26, March 19 and April 16.
Attendees will learn how Arguimbau makes his own materials – from grinding his own pigments from powders and milling his own hard wood panels to frame his works – all while emulating the Renaissance experience.
A leading pastel artist in the Connecticut impressionist movement known for her renditions of children, seascapes and animals, Ballinger will discuss the origins of pastel and the historical artists who were gifted in the medium. The artist will also demonstrate how to capture mood and light with her pastel painting techniques.
Longtime Maritime Gallery artist and notable watercolorist, Bonamarte will show how he uses watercolors to create vibrant paintings that are highly sought by collectors.
Baron, an award-winning artist, instructor and signature member of the American Watercolor Society, will show how she utilizes both watercolor and oils to capture nature’s beauty.
