Mystic Seaport to Host Presentation on AC72 Sailing Cats
March 14, 2012
Mystic Seaport will host a presentation by champion sailor Cam Lewis on the new AC72 class catamarans that will compete for the 34th America’s Cup in 2013. The talk will take place Saturday, March 17, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the River Room at Latitude 41° Restaurant at Mystic Seaport.
The 34th America’s Cup will take place in San Francisco in September, 2013. In a bid to make the racing more exciting for spectators, Cup organizers commissioned a new design that would be faster than the previous International America’s Cup Class boats. The result is the AC72, a 72’ catamaran with a rigid wing sail that is expected to reach speeds in excess of 30 knots (34.6 mph). The design represents the latest in sailing technology and a radical change for the Cup.
Cam Lewis, a member of the victorious 1988 America’s Cup team Stars & Stripes—also a catamaran—will recount the inside story of the AC72 design and development, and provide a preview to the Cup competition.
