New Beach Declared on Block Island
April 4, 2011
Block Island Times: The Block Island Town Council met Tuesday, March 29, to discuss how to proceed with site planning for the recently purchased Old Harbor land, which it decided would be known henceforth as Pole Harbor Beach.
The new name refers to the historic harbor that existed before the breakwater was installed, which consisted of long poles that the fishing boats would tie off to.
The council decided the short-term priority at the site was repairing erosion at the corner of Water and Dodge streets, where the sidewalk is being undermined. The path to the beach there is also considered dangerous and the council will review ways to direct walkers to safer access points.
