New Bedford Harbor Sees Rise in Freighter Traffic
December 28, 2014
SouthCoastToday: From zero just a few years ago, freighter traffic in New Bedford Harbor has risen to the point where, for the first time, there were two in the harbor at the same time a few days ago.
Deputy Port Director Edward Anthes-Washburn said that the clementines aboard both ships will be marketed not only to Canada but to the U.S. as well for the first time. “It’s an exciting development,” he said. “It’s huge for the port.”
He said 5 or 6 freighters have arrived so far this season, bringing their cargoes of clementines from Mediterranean countries. “We’re expecting another 10 or 15.”
