Launched in 2015 by Mike Howarth and his son, Barrett, California-based Mag Bay Yachts comes with a pedigree, as Mike was part of the duo that created Cabo Yachts, known for producing some of the best sport fishing boats in the world.
In the 1990s, Mike and his partner, Henry Mohrschladt, built Cabo on an uncompromising attention to quality, outstanding fit and finish, and a passionate commitment to its customers and dealers alike. Meanwhile, the younger Howarth cut his teeth on boats and boatbuilding while growing up around the Cabo facility, so it was only natural that he’d one day put his own stamp on the industry.
Now, father and son have teamed up to write a new chapter in the family’s commitment to producing boats. In launching Mag Bay Yachts, they’ve gathered experienced members of their former boatbuilding crew and set their sights on once again setting the industry standard for quality.
The company’s first model is the 33 Mag Bay, a stepped-hull center console with a length of 33’ 6” and a roomy 10’ beam. Deadrise at the transom is 22 degrees and displacement is approximately 10,000 pounds. The 33 has a fuel capacity of 338 gallons and a 38-gallon freshwater tank. Insulated fishboxes, dry storage and pressurized live wells are all standard, as is the customizable aluminum T-top with an integrated electronics box. Stainless steel and powder-coated options are available.
The 33 is available with a choice of 2 large consoles, both offering plenty of room for electronics and featuring user-friendly controls and switches. A glovebox storage area includes USB ports and outboard ignition controls. Optional fiberglass or hand-built teak helm pods add a tasteful touch.
All rigging and wiring is done after the boat is assembled to ensure that the runs are accessible for future rigging. Further, all wiring components are oversized to ensure voltage continuity and long life.
As for the hull, the patented “SVVT” stepped design from Michael Peters offers an extremely dry, fast, efficient and stable ride in all sea conditions. Virtually no bow rise, quick time to plane and lightning fast top-end speeds are just some of the highlights of the design.
