New Data Show Decline in Maine Lobster Population

New data gathered by a University of Maine scientist have reinforced recent trends in the Northeast lobster population that show expansion in Atlantic Canada, while numbers of juvenile lobster in the Gulf of Maine, from Bar Harbor to Cape Cod, are below average.

The new data was gathered from 23 areas from Rhode Island to Prince Edward Island where young lobsters are known to settle. The low numbers of lobster recruitment in Maine fishing areas could be the result of warming waters in the Gulf of Maine, but might also reflect natural fluctuations in the lobster population. Sites south of Cape Cod showed almost no young lobsters.
