New Owner for Race Rock Lighthouse
July 8, 2013
The new owners of Race Rock Lighthouse have given themselves a difficult challenge: To figure out how to make a lighthouse in notoriously dangerous waters accessible to the public.
The federal government has turned over ownership of Race Rock Lighthouse to the New London Maritime Society. For 130 years, the lighthouse has guided mariners along the dangerous waters southwest of Fishers Island.
According to an article on Newsday.com, the society is planning restoration and educational efforts, and ultimately hopes to provide public tours. That last goal is difficult because the lighthouse is at the edge of The Race, a channel with swift currents that bedeviled the contractor who built the lighthouse by sweeping away foundation boulders.
