Newburyport Captain Honored for Heroic Rescue

Sawyer Smith, a captain with TowBoatUS Newburyport, recently received the Meritorious Service Award for his rescue of a man who had fallen into the Merrimack River last June, according to an article in the Newburyport News.

On June 24, Smith, 24, was at the Bridge Marina where TowBoatUS keeps its vessels, when he heard yelling and saw a man in the water, struggling against the current. Water temperatures were still in the 50s. Smith grabbed a life ring, dove into the chilly water, swam out to the man and placed the life ring around him.
