SouthCoastToday: Lightships are something of a sore subject in New Bedford, ever since the city-owned lightship New Bedford took on water, keeled over and sank at its waterfront pier in 2006 after decades of neglect.

But they’re not a sore subject for Stanley “Bob” Barboza, whose experience in supplying, maintaining and working aboard lightships takes him back to 1934.
