Spurred by a general agreement among both biologists and fishermen that once vibrant cod populations are a shadow of what they once were, the New England Fishery Management Council recently imposed severe cuts to cod catch limits in the Northeast. Few people understand the impact that has on the fishing industry and Northeast communities quite like Matthew McKenzie.

McKenzie, an assistant professor of history and maritime studies at the University of Connecticut, is profiled in a recent article on the UConn Today website. He brings his historian’s perspective to his role as a Connecticut delegate to the fisheries council. And he paints a bleak picture of how far the cod fishing industry has fallen.
