The Boston Harbor Islands Alliance recently provided an update on the public mooring system in the Boston Harbor Islands National Park.

Over the past few seasons, the existing moorings set in the Park have been moved by storms, damaged and, in some cases, lost completely. BHIA recently hired a contractor to find and inspect the moorings, which are now in good working order. The BHIA is also working with local harbormasters to identify the best locations for the moorings around the most popular islands, taking into account boaters’ needs and protection for the moorings.

All of the moorings (except those next to the Spectacle Island Marina) are currently free to boaters in the Park on a first come, first served basis. When all the moorings are re-positioned, the improved locations will allow boaters to enjoy easier access to the islands and to attend some of the free events that happen throughout the summer and into the fall.
