It’s a journey that harkens back to the Age of Exploration. Three adventure-minded paddlers plan to canoe the length of Rhode Island this summer, traveling from Burrillville in the north down to Westerly on the coast.
Chuck Horbert, 45, Tom Taylor, 54, and Jim Cole, 65, plan to begin their adventure on June 8. The 106-mile route they’ve mapped has them paddling nine rivers, the Blackstone Canal, and Narragansett Bay. Along the way, they’ll have to portage 17 of those miles, and they plan to camp at night mostly on public land with special permission. They expect the trip to take them a week, and they plan to arrive in Westerly on June 15.
