Many state residents may not be aware that the state is home to one of the service academies. New London [Connecticut] is the locale of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, which trains officers for the nation’s oldest service.

The Academy suffered extensive damage from Hurricane Sandy to its main pier, its seamanship and sailing center, its seawall and slate roofs.

The administration is seeking $18 million for repairs.
