Coast Guard members from Sector Long Island Sound, in New Haven, Connecticut, conducted an Area Maritime Security Training and Exercise Program Functional Exercise with several local, state and government agencies on June 13, 2013.
The purpose of the exercise was to improve the capability of the port area of Bridgeport to deter a transportation security incident (TSI). Participants concentrated on implementing and conducting command and control in accordance with the National Incident Management System.
Critical tasks of the exercise included:
- Attaining Maritime Security levels
- implementing prevention and protection procedures
- validating port security risk assessments
- identification of and security procedures for critical infrastructure
- TSI planning scenarios and facilitating recovery from a TSI
“The collaboration and positive interaction among local, state, federal, private and commercial entities are what allow the maritime environment to be safe and secure for commerce and recreation,” said Capt. Joseph M. Vojvodich, commander, Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound. “These functional exercises are the proving grounds for future successful responses to any type of incidents in our waterways.”
Participating agencies included: Coast Guard personnel, Transportation Security Administration, FBI, Connecticut State Police, Connecticut Department of Public Health, Connecticut Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, Connecticut State Police Emergency Services Unit, Bridgeport Police Department, Bridgeport Fire Department, Bridgeport Hospital, the Harbormaster, Town of Fairfield, Town of Stratford, St. Vincent’s Medical Center, American Medical Response in Bridgeport, The Bridgeport and Port Jefferson Steamboat Company, McAllister Towing, and Facility Security Officers in the port of Bridgeport.
