A group of endangered sea turtles rescued from beaches on Cape Cod will be transported from by the Coast Guard to Orlando, Florida, via an HC-130 plane. The “mission” is scheduled to take place today, December 7.
Once the turtles are dropped off in Florida, they will continue their journey to their new “home for the holidays” at sanctuaries and rehabilitation centers throughout the state.
“The threatened loggerhead and endangered Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles were found comatose or ‘cold-stunned’ on the Northeast coast,” said Katie Moore, the Living Marine Resources program manager at Coast Guard Atlantic Area in Portsmouth, Virginia. “Without the joint-agency rescue effort, the turtles wouldn’t have survived the cold weather.”
