It’s kind of like American Idol for aspiring marine technicians. At the Maine Boat Show next month, Portland Yacht Services and the Universal Technical Institute will award $10,000 in scholarships to high school students who excel in a competition that will test their ability to solve marine-related mechanical problems, such as repairing an outboard engine or motorboat console, according to an article in the Portland Press Herald.
Portland Yacht Services plans to hire 15 to 20 marine technicians as it expands its business over the next few years. But they see one obstacle to their growth being a lack of skilled workers who can repair outboard motors and diesel engines. They see this competition as a way to invest in their future.
