The [Newburyport, MA] Harbormaster’s office is used to facing unknown situations when it gets called out for a rescue, but this one might take the prize for one of the strangest.

Around 3:30 p.m. [August 21] the Coast Guard received a distress call from a boater. A rescue was required off the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge beach.

But it wasn’t your usual 2-legged swimmer. This swimmer had 4 legs, doe eyes and big ears. It was a deer that swam a half-mile off the coast, and was now struggling to keep its head above water.
