In the pre-dawn darkness on August 17 [2013], roughly 100 stand-up paddleboarders will push-off from a beach in Plymouth, Massachusetts, hoping to paddle a whopping 34 miles across Cape Cod Bay to Wellfleet.

The paddlers are taking part in the Cape Cod Bay Challenge, an endurance event that tests both body and mind. This year will be the sixth year that the challenge has been held, and it is the longest stand-up paddle event on the East Coast. What makes the crossing of the bay even more unique is that it is not a race. Paddlers cross together, supporting each other along the way. The trip across the bay takes roughly 10 to 12 hours, and paddlers are rewarded with a party in Wellfleet.
