Smelt were once so popular in New Hampshire’s Great Bay that local farmers could catch them by the barrel and use them as fertilizer in their fields. Today, the region’s smelt population has declined to such an extent that the state lists smelt as a Species of Special Concern.

A recent blog entry on GreenAlliance.biz discusses the decline of Great Bay smelt and reveals what is being done to help the population.
