The Bangor Daily News reports that as of April 5, 23 summonses have been issued statewide by the Maine Department of Natural Resources’ Marine Patrol to people who were caught fishing for elvers (juvenile American eels) without a license.

With the price of elvers often surpassing $2,000 a pound, the number of people taking part in the fishery has risen dramatically.
