Siblings Vinnie and Nicole Balsamo come by their love of the water naturally. “Some of my earliest memories are of me and Vinnie exploring the marshes of Cape Cod,” recalls Nicole. “Later, our dad taught us how to navigate the waters that surrounded our summer home. This meant man-powered canoes at first. We spent hours on the pond nearby, searching for the granddaddy snapping turtle and fishing for who knows what.”
The 2 kids soon grew bored of the canoe, especially given their growing passion for fishing, and graduated to a 12′ skiff. Anxious to hit the open ocean and embrace all that Nantucket Sound had to offer, they took a boating-safety class and took off in search of more aquatic adventures.
That passion for the water and boating has endured, and it eventually led the Balsamos to create a line of boating t-shirts and accessories that reflect the ideal day.
“We learned the channels, the rocks, the sandbars, and the best spots to fish. We probably could have made our way to Martha’s Vineyard in that 12-footer if we didn’t think Mom would have killed us,” laughs Nicole. “Those days spawned Vinnie’s famous line: ‘I just wanna get down there’—an all-encompassing expression that meant, down to the dock, down to the boat, down to the beach.”
That passion for the water and boating has endured, and it eventually led the Balsamos to create a line of boating t-shirts and accessories that reflect the ideal day. “[The clothing] evokes an attitude, a care-free, can-do outlook on life,” says Nicole, who created many of the images and slogans for the Mariner’s Mirror line of products. Vinnie also plays a creative role in the shirt designs, while serving as the company’s business manager and website developer.
“We simply want to provide a fun, less-serious way for people to express their love for boating,” says Vinnie.
The Mariner’s Mirror line currently consists of t-shirts (long- and short-sleeve), towels, bags and belts, all made of comfortable, high-quality materials. The shirt designs are low-key, laidback, and immediately identify the wearer as a boat- and water-lover through their nautical, often humorous, and decidedly non-preppy designs.
