Photographer Christopher Seufert took the above photo of the recent breach along the Monomoy peninsula, created during the big Nor’easter of February 9, 2013.
The new break has once again made lower Monomoy an island, and occurred close to where the old “Southway” was located. The photo shows the Monomoy beach looking north toward Chatham at high tide on February 26, 2013. “There are washover streams all over the outer beach south of this point,” writes Seufert, “so change is in the works.”
Fishermen are hoping that the new break will restore the great flats fishing for stripers that existed on the western side of Monomoy prior to the old Southway filling in.
