It may be old news to some, but the January 2 (2014) blizzard has created a new inlet just north of the 2013 break that reopened the Southway—the shallow channel that separates Monomoy Island from South Beach in Chatham, Massachusetts. What began as a small washover now appears to have the characteristics of a full-blown inlet.
Some experts believe that the island between the 2 inlets will likely erode by spring, especially if the Outer Cape sees more significant storms. This may create a wider, deeper channel for boaters to use in 2014. We’ll keep you posted.
