Amtrak is close to wrapping up its 3-year project to replace the old Niantic River railbridge (aka “Old Nan”).

The new bridge is currently functional and has a backup power system. It can be raised in about a minute and a half—twice as fast as the old bridge.

Boaters will be glad to learn that the channel below the bridge was widened from 45’ to 100’, with an additional 5’ of vertical clearance added.
