Newburyport News: The biannual beach cleanup at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge scheduled for Saturday, March 31, may set records for trash collection as well as for power generation.
Dubbed “Litter to Light,” the anticipated collection of 3 tons of trash will be hauled to the Covanta Energy plant in Haverhill for conversion to electric power. The 1-day haul from the Parker River beach cleanup will generate enough electricity to power 2 typical households for an entire year, according to Ken Nydam, business manager at Covanta’s Haverhill facility.
