Newport Daily News: Newport, Rhode Island, has won its bid to be the North American port of call in the 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race, which is expected to have a multimillion-dollar impact on the local and state economies.

Governor Lincoln D. Chafee, Senate President M. Teresa Paiva Weed, D-Newport, House Speaker Gordon D. Fox, D-Providence, officials from the state’s Economic Development Corp. and Newport Mayor Harry Winthrop are scheduled to make the official announcement today [February 5] at 2:30 p.m.

“We are proud to be the supervising authority for the Volvo event here,” said Brad Read, executive director of Sail Newport. “It’s a little daunting. We will need the help of the entire state to pull this off correctly.”
