The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) today released the name of the boater from Chaplin who died on Saturday, December 8, after falling into the Housatonic River on Friday, December 7. The victim has been identified as 55-year-old Donald A. Bessette of 147 Palmer Road, Chaplin.
On the evening of December 7, Connecticut State Environmental Conservation Police responded to an accident that occurred at approximately 6:50 p.m. when a 21’ fishing vessel with 3 men aboard struck a piling in the Housatonic River in Shelton. One of the 3 men on the boat fell into the water. The other 2 boaters could not locate the missing man and called 911.
Emergency personnel from the Town of Shelton responded and found the man unresponsive in the water. He was first transported to Griffin Hospital, Derby, and was later transferred to Yale-New Haven Hospital where he died on Saturday. State Environmental Conservation Police, including members of the Boating Accident Reconstruction Unit, continue to investigate the incident.
