CapeCodOnline: All of the Nauset [Massachusetts] estuary system including Nauset Harbor and Town Cove in both Eastham and Orleans has been closed to shellfishing for all species due to elevated levels of red tide toxins in the meat of sampled shellfish.

The order from the state Division of Marine Fisheries goes into effect this morning [April 25, 2013].

Red tide algae bloom in the cool waters of the spring, fed by nutrients in the water column as well as the increasing sunlight offered by the lengthening day.
