Rescuers freed a young humpback whale from an entanglement in fishing gear on Thursday, in the waters east of Chatham (PCCS image taken under NOAA Permit 932-1905).

CapeCodOnline: A public hearing is scheduled this evening to gather comments on a federal proposal to limit vertical fishing lines as a way to help prevent large whale deaths and serious injuries.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries Northeast Regional Office will host the meeting from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the community center at 702 Main St. (Chatham). The meeting is one of 16 scheduled in August and September from Maine to Florida as part of a proposed revision of the federal Atlantic Large Whale Take Reduction Plan.
