An article on CapeCodOnline.com recounts the Mach 29, 1984, grounding of the 471’ freighter Eldia on the beach off Nauset during a spring nor’easter. During the storm, winds were clocked at 80 to 90 mph offshore, spawning 18’ to 20’ waves.
The Maltese-flagged Eldia, her holds empty, was driven onto the Outer Cape, where she sat for 49 days until finally being pulled off the beach by a barge on full-moon tide.
