Four Rhode Island marine companies have banded together to stage a day of boating fun and education in downtown Newport as part of National Marina Day, a nationwide event designed to make boating more accessible.
On Saturday, June 8, the Newport Yachting Center will host a day of powerboat seminars for beginners and seasoned boaters alike. Confident Captain—a Newport-based company whose professional instructors train mariners of all skill levels—will run 1-hour clinics for a nominal fee in boats provided by Freedom Boat Club and Marinemax.
“Our event on June 8 is a great opportunity for all types of boaters—from novices who want an opportunity to see what boating is all about, to seasoned boat owners who want to gain the skill and confidence that ultimately makes boating more fun,” says Dick Cromwell of Freedom Boat Club.
At the Rhode Island National Marina Day event, one-hour on-the-water sessions will be offered at the Newport Yachting Center (20 Commercial Wharf) beginning at 10 AM and ending with a final session at 4:00 p.m. Instructors will focus each session on specific skills, with one session on Anchoring and a second on Docking & Close-Quarters Maneuvering.
The event is endorsed by the Rhode Island Marine Trades Association (RIMTA), and the hope of RIMTA CEO Wendy Mackie is that this national day to celebrate boating is not just limited to formally organized events. “We hope boaters will also celebrate in their own way on June 8, by taking non-boating friends and family onboard to introduce them to the joys of boating and the beauty of our Rhode Island waters.”
Each session at the Rhode Island National Marina Day event has a nominal fee of $10. Signup in advance is recommended. Visit the RIMTA website at www.rimta.org and click on National Marina Day to find a link to registration, or call the Freedom Boat Club at (401-682-2244).
