On Wednesday, May 15, Mattapoisett harbormasters responded to a call that a sailboat had grounded on a sandbar east of Ned’s Point. Upon arriving on scene, responders found a sailboat hard aground with its sails intact, but no one aboard. However, a few minutes later, a body was spotted floating in the water nearby.
According to sources, a sailor had been bringing his boat through Woods Hole to West Falmouth singlehanded on Wednesday morning when he experienced equipment failure. He called his wife to inform her of the situation after clearing Woods Hole, but was never heard from again. It is not clear whether the man, who was reportedly in his 50s, had fallen overboard and clung to the sailboat or a trailing line, or if his body fell overboard upon grounding on the sandbar. The results of an autopsy are pending.
