Pen Bay Pilot: It’s a sad day when a storied local business ends up in financial trouble and goes on the auction block, but when it’s a schooner that dates back to 1922 and a business that continues to ply the tourist trade off Maine’s Midcoast, there is much reason to mourn.

The schooner Nathaniel Bowditch will be auctioned to the highest bidder Friday, February 14, at 1:00 p.m. at Sharp’s Wharf in Camden. The Nathaniel Bowditch, owned by Owen and Cathie Dorr of Rockland, was seized December 23, 2013, at its Rockland Harbor berth in Lermond Cove by U.S. Marshals and towed to Camden Harbor. A civil foreclosure case against the Dorrs has been working its way through the U.S. District Court’s Admiralty Division in the weeks leading up to and following the seizure.
