SouthCoastToday: Beachgoers at Horseneck Beach and Gooseberry Island have been evacuated from the water after a fisherman thought he saw a shark, police and state officials said.
William Hickey, a spokesman for the state Department of Conservation and Recreation, said the sighting off Gooseberry Island prompted the closing of Horseneck and Gooseberry to bathers. DCR manages the state beach at Horseneck.
“Public safety is our priority,” Hickey said, explaining the decision was made about noontime.
