The Coast Guard plans to start breaking ice on the Kennebec River on Wednesday, March 26, after meteorologists announced that the risk for spring flooding in Maine is above normal.

Three Coast Guard vessels are expected to break ice between Gardiner and Merrymeeting Bay.

The National Weather Service has characterized the state’s risk for spring flooding and ice jams as “above normal”, due to a deep snow pack and areas of thick ice.
