27east.com reports that 4 sharks tagged and released this summer during Montauk’s first satellite tag and all-release tournament in July 2013, are providing researchers with important data on the migratory habits of the species.
One of the sharks, a 9’, 200-pound blue shark, has since swum nearly 3,500 miles and was most recently tracked near the British Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
The nonprofit organization Ocearch, which studies large apex predators, has been tracking the animals’ movements and mapping them online so the public can follow along.
