In winter 2012 I dropped in on GMT Composites in Bristol, Rhode Island, to get a firsthand look at how this cutting-edge company builds carbon-fiber masts, booms, and other components for high-end sailboats. Led by founder and chief engineer David Schwartz, himself an experienced sailor, GMT has become one of the leading carbon-fiber builders in the boating industry. It currently makes carbon masts and booms for new and refit projects on both production and custom boats, as well as custom components for the military, the aerospace industry and high-tech companies outside the marine industry.

In the accompanying video, GMT’s director of sales and marketing Jonathan Craig shows how the company builds some of its masts and booms for large sailboats using both male and female tooling at its state-of-the-art Bristol facility. As you’ll see, working with carbon fiber has its share of challenges, but GMT and its highly trained staff has it down to a science.
