Yankee Magazine writer Rowan Jacobsen details his recent experience as a volunteer on one of the research expeditions that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration runs to count cod and other fish off the Northeast coast.
Sailing aboard the Bigelow, Jacobson made repeated tows in Cape Cod Bay, Stellwagen Bank and other traditional cod-fishing grounds. What he found did not bode well for cod fishermen, although he did find an abundance of other, less-marketable species.
