Even though kids in Stamford, Connecticut live right near Long Island Sound, many never experience being on the water or feel comfortable on it.

But an organization aims to change that. According to a recent article in the Stamford Advocate, the Young Mariners Foundation gave 116 Stamford fifth-graders certificates for completing a program aimed at introducing them to the water. Students learned swimming skills, how to do CPR, how to board a boat and how to put on a lifejacket.
