The New Hampshire Fish & Game Department reports that Drew Hankins, age 27, of Newbury, NH, was arrested early Friday morning (April 1, 2016) for illegal taking of American eels, as well as other charges.

Hankins was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit by NH Fish & Game Conservation Officers, assisted by NH State Police. The incident occurred on the Hampton Falls River near Route 1 in Hampton Falls, NH.

A search warrant was served on Hankin’s vehicle, which was located near the scene, and he was found to be in possession of equipment for taking American eels, as well as methamphetamines and a large amount of cash.

Hankins was arraigned April 4 in Portsmouth District Court on 6 counts of taking American eels Less than 9” in length, 1 count of taking American eels without a harvest permit, falsifying physical evidence, disobeying a conservation officer, and possession of a controlled drug. He is being held on $5,000 cash bail.

It was found that Hankins had been previously convicted of illegal take of American eels in 2014. The fact that this was a second offense makes it a Class B felony. Possession of a Controlled Drug and Falsifying Physical Evidence are also Class B felonies.
